The Black Heart Procession este o trupă indie rock din San Diego, care a intrat pe piaţa muzicală în 1997. Tobias Nathaniel şi Pall Jenkins au la activ şase albume, 1, 2, Three, Amore Del Tropico, The Spell şi Six, lansat în 2009, cu un an înainte de a decide că band-ul are nevoie de o pauză. Pe 29 martie, în club Control, Tobias Nathaniel şi Pall Jenkins îşi vor pune sufletele pe tavă şi vor încercă să ne atingă inimile cu piese de acum 20 de ani.
InfoMusic: Cum vă simţiţi să cântaţi din nou, ca band, după o pauză de 3 ani?
Tobias Nathaniel: Eu n-o să cânt, dar cred că ar fi interesant. Am mai avut câteva apariţii anul trecut, în august, în San Diego şi Las Vegas. Aici Pall poate fi mai explicit.
Pall Jenkins: Va fi, cu siguranţă, interesant să interpretăm piese din perioada de început a trupei.
InfoMusic: Ce a însemnat acest hiatus pentru trupă?
Tobias Nathaniel: Pentru mine, aceasta pauză a avut un impact nu atât la nivel de trupă cât în ceea ce mă priveşte ca individ. După 17 ani în care am făcut muzică aşa cum am ştiut noi mai bine, să luăm o pauză mi-a permis să experimentez lucruri noi în viaţă. Acum, reîntoarcerea în BHP a fost extrem de confortabilă, ca şi cum aş fi îmbrăcat un costum în care mă simt bine. S-au întâmplat multe în aceşti 3 ani şi este chiar fain să fac chestiile astea, din nou.
Pall Jenkins: Revenirea este extrem de familiară, iar noi suntem acum mai copţi la minte şi mai înţelepţi.
InfoMusic: Ce reprezintă muzica, pentru fiecare dintre voi?
Tobias Nathaniel: În viaţa de zi cu zi, pentru mine nu înseamnă mare lucru. Nu prea ascult muzică. Piesele care-mi rămân în cap au tendinţa să mă bântuie până se materializează într-un fel sau altul.
Pall Jenkins: Muzica poate să însemne multe lucruri. Muzica este hrană pe o masă sacră. Muzica este sângele de pe mâinile pătate de vină, muzica este vântul care foşneşte printre frunze, muzica este liniştea din sălbăticie. Noi suntem animale, iar atunci când suntem în pericol căutăm refugiul în pădure.
InfoMusic: Unii cred că muzica poate schimba lumea. Ce părere aveţi despre asta? Poate ea, cel puţin, să schimbe lumile noastre interioare?
Tobias Nathaniel: N-a făcut-o deja? Şi lumile noastre interioare nu au un impact mare asupra a ceea ce se întâmplă în jurul nostru, dând altă formă lucrurilor?
Pall Jenkins: Eu cred că mai mult lumea are tendinţa de a schimba muzica.
InfoMusic: Printre piesele voastre, aveţi un cântec superb, „Your church is red” în care un vers sună cam aşa „change your hate cause that's your slave”. Este greu să faci asta?
Tobias Nathaniel: Ura este, într-adevăr, o bestie care creează multe probleme şi nu de puţine ori m-am întrebat cum se intersectează toate aceste sentimente puternice, iubirea, respectul, invidia, frica şi cum, amestecate în acelaşi recipient, pot să creeze ceva monstruos. Dacă este dificil de schimbat? Poţi să fii sigură de asta. Uneori, rădăcinile urii sunt atât de adânci încât este imposibil s-o înlături. Cu toate astea, cred că, odată descompusă în piesele sale principale, ura poate fi dizolvată. Când putem să rescriem scenariul, cred că se poate transforma în ceva pozitiv.
Pall Jenkins: Poate părea imposibil de schimbat, totuşi mai există o mică speranţă în marea aceasta de întuneric.
InfoMusic: În majoritatea pieselor voastre, versurile sunt despre inimi rănite, tristeţe şi iubiri pierdute. Toate acestea va fac să fiţi mai conectați la sufletul publicului?
Tobias Nathaniel: Inima mea a sângerat de multe ori. Ale voastre nu?
Pall Jenkins: Conexiunea este foarte fragilă, este ca un gaz ușor inflamabil care asteaptă doar o scânteie pentru a cuprinde inimi. Tristeţea este un limbaj, da.
InfoMusic: Care album sau piesă vă reprezintă mai mult, ca trupă?
Tobias Nathaniel: Dacă ar fi să vorbesc cu cineva care nu a auzit de BHP, i-aş recomanda al doilea album. Din punctul meu de vedere, toată magia noastră este înglobată în acel material.
Pall Jenkins: Fiecare piesă şi album sunt reprezentative, totul depinde de public cum le percepe.
InfoMusic: Veniţi în Bucureşti pentru prima oara. Ce ştiţi despre România?
Tobias Nathaniel: Hai să spunem că trăind în Serbia pentru cel puţin 2 ani, regiunea nu mi-e în totalitate necunoscută. Să-l amintesc pe Dracula! Glumesc, bineînţeles. Noi îl avem pe Sava Savanović, aşa că sunt sătul de vampiri. Cel puţin acum. Am auzit multe lucruri bune despre mâncare. Aveţi un fel de brânză, telemea, pe care noi n-o găsim în State şi care e oarecum asemănătoare cu feta grecească?
Pall Jenkins: Cred că România este un loc încărcat de istorie şi multă forţă.
InfoMusic: Acum că v-aţi reunit, ca band, ne putem aştepta la un nou album?
Tobias Nathaniel: Niciodată n am vorbit despre BHP ca nefiind o trupă. Dar sper să se întâmple şi noi albume. Sunt încrezător.
Pall Jenkins: Poate vor mai exista piese, cândva. Nu ştim încă.

The Black Heart Procession is not just a band from San Diego, it’a s a state of mind, a connection between two worlds. And next month, on 29th of March, Pall Jenkins and his band will come to a concert in Bucharest, to honor the 20th anniversary of their first album, One. „Laugh, cry and absolve your sins with us. Together, we'll brighten the world, confront the shadows beneath our beds and......well...you could just come to the show in your town where we'll be performing our first record from start to finish, with some extra stuff for the encore. Hope to see you all there, tears of laughter and sorrow alike”, they promise.
InfoMusic: Hello and thanks for sharing some thoughts with us, before the concert you’ll have in Romania.
Black Heart Procession: Thanks, and we’re very much looking forward to the show.
InfoMusic: How do you feel singing again, as a band, after a three years hiatus?
Tobias Nathaniel: Luckily I won’t be singing. But I guess it’d be interesting. We did have a little singing last August in San Diego and Las Vegas. Perhaps Pall can comment more accurately.
Pall Jenkins: I think it feels good and will be nice to visit with these songs.
InfoMusic: That break changed you, aș a band?
Tobias Nathaniel: For me, not so much as a band, but certainly as an individual. We spent 17 years doing this professionally, and taking a break has allowed me to experience life in a new way. Coming back to BHP has been unexpectedly comfortable – kind of like putting on an old yet curiously familiar suit. A lot has happened in those 3 years; it’s nice to don those good ol’ duds once again.
Pall Jenkins: Coming back together is very familiar we are just a little older and wiser.
InfoMusic: Was it like a „cry for love”? The love of the public?
Tobias Nathaniel: Our resident wordsmith’ll have to report further on this. However, much of what Pall and I agree on about lyrics is interpretation. Pall may have had something specific in mind, but in the end, the listener will ultimately make a connection in the way they see fit. It’s like reading a book: would you rather see a pre-designed image of your favorite character or scene, or leave it up to your imagination to construct something more personal and meaningful?
Pall Jenkins: I would hate to see the public cry maybe morn with out tears.
InfoMusic: What does music mean to each of you?
Tobias Nathaniel: In my day-to-day life, not much, to be honest. I’m a purveyor and not a listener. That said, the songs which appear in my head can tend to haunt me until they’ve managed to materialize in some way or another.
Pall Jenkins: Music means many things. Music is food on a sacred table. Music is blood from guilty hands, music is the wind between the leaves and trees, music is silence in the wild, we are animals and when in distress we seek refuge in the forest.
InfoMusic: Some people think music can change the world. What do you think about that? Can it change, at least, our inner worlds?
Tobias Nathaniel: Hasn’t it already? Further, don’t our ‚inner worlds’ have a direct impact on and thus shape the material world around us?
Pall Jenkins: I think the world more likely changes music.
InfoMusic: You have a great song, „Your church is red” and you say „change your hate cause that's your slave”. Is it difficult to change it?
Tobias Nathaniel: Hate is indeed a unique and troublesome beast – I often wonder about the intersection of love, respect, envy and fear; these are all powerful sentiments in their own right, but somehow when tossed together into the same pot - in just the right proportion – tend to create an unmanageable monstrosity. Difficult to change? You bet. Sometimes the root of hate is so entrenched that it’d be near impossible to unearth and address. However, as deep as these roots may go, I think that hate is ultimately a malign composition that can be broken down to its constituent parts. When we can collectively deconstruct and re-write the script, I think we’ll be onto something positive.
Pall Jenkins: Next to impossible to change yet with a slight hope one can see in the dark.
InfoMusic: In most of your songs you sing about wounded hearts, sadness, about lost love. All these feelings can make a better connection with the audience?
Tobias Nathaniel: My heart has bled raindrops. Hasn’t yours?
Pall Jenkins: A connection is light as air. A connection is a flammable orderless gas waiting for a flame. Saddness is a language.
InfoMusic: Which song or album represent you most, as a band?
Tobias Nathaniel: If I were to suggest a BHP album to someone who’d never heard of us before, it’d likely be the second one. I think all the magic is there in full force.
Pall Jenkins: Everything is a representation of itself it's just up to people to receive the sacrament.
InfoMusic: You’ll come to Romania for the first time. What have you heard about this country?
Tobias Nathaniel: Having lived in Serbia for the last 2 years, I’m not entirely hopeless concerning the general region. That said…Dracula! Kidding, of course. We have Sava Savanović, so my vampire appetite has been sated. For now. I’ve heard something about the food. Do you have beli sir (white cheese)? We don’t really have anything like it (generally) in the States. Closest is Greek style feta.
Pall Jenkins: Romania I believe is a place where strength is gathered and held with the best regard and cherished in the feast for all.
InfoMusic: Now that you are a band, again, can we expect a new album?
Tobias Nathaniel: We’ve never really not been a band. But I’m hopeful.
Pall Jenkins: There may be new songs sometime. We are not sure.
