Bună și bine ați venit în România. Cum vă simțiți?
Josephine: Minunat! Este foarte cald aici.
Anthony: Suntem încântați să fim în România pentru prima oară.
Prima voastră piesă a avut 100.000 de ascultări în doar 3 zile. Vă amintiți cum v-ați simțit în acel moment?
Josephine: Da, am fost foarte surprinși. Abia începusem proiectul și am urcat o piesă pe Soundcloud și nu am spus nimănui despre asta, eram complet anonimi. Faptul că au fost 100.000 de ascultări în câteva zile…ne-am zis “Cine sunt acești oameni?”. Și apoi a crescut și a crescut, s-au făcut milioane, apoi zeci de milioane, apoi sute de milioane și era ciudat. O nebunie, oameni adevărați chiar ascultau muzica noastră. Poate erau de fapt roboți, cine știe? (râde)
Josephine, tu erai o artistă solo și Anthony ai făcut parte din mai multe trupe. Cum v-ați întâlnit și de unde v-a venit ideea numelui Oh Wonder?
Anthony: Ne-am întâlnit în Londra, în studio, eu încercam să îi găsesc un contract cu o casă de discuri lui Josephine și din acel punct ne-am dat seama că putem compune bine împreună, că ne completăm versurile reciproc. A fost motivul principal. Și apoi Oh Wonder s-a fondat pentru că Josephine mă tot bătea la cap să lansăm. Aveam o piesă care se numește "Body Gold" și îmi tot spunea că trebuie sa o lansăm. În fine, mi-a luat cam doi ani să accept oferta ei și apoi…s-a născut Oh Wonder.
Josephine, ai spus la un moment dat că ți-ai fi dorit să compui o piesă pentru Rihanna. Cum vă simțiți acum, când sunteți în UK Chart cu albumul "Ultralife"?
Josephine: E o nebunie, am găsit o listă de visuri și țeluri pe care le-am scris cu ani în urmă. Un vis era să contribuim la un album din Top 10 deci cred că în mintea noastră ne imaginam că am fi scrie o mică parte dintr-o piesă de pe albumul altcuiva. Nu am visat niciodată că avea să fie albumul nostru, compus în întregime de noi, așa că a fost incredibil de copleșitor și unul dintre cele mai frumoase momente ale carierei noastre de până acum. Totuși, încă vreau să scriu pentru Rihanna, e încă un vis.

Încă îl ai pe lista ta de dorințe nu e așa?
Josephine: Da!
Pentru ultimul album, Ultralife, soundul specific Oh Wonder este cu siguranță mai evoluat. Ați experimentat mai multe genuri muzicale. Cum se face că ați decis să păstrați zgomotele de la rețeaua de transport public din Londra?
Anthony: Cred că am vrut să experimentăm mai mult în muzica noastră, am fost în turneu timp de doi ani și cântam live cu toboșar și chitară bass, deci cred că am vrut să dezvoltăm acel sound, să avem mai mulți muzicieni pe album. Așa că ne-am dus în studio, cu un toboșar și un basist și am dat mai multă energie muzicii, cred. A fost scopul principal.
Cum a fost să înregistrați în faimosul Abbey Road Studios versiunile live cu pian ale pieselor “High on humans” și “Ultralife”?
Josephine: A fost incredibil! Abbey Road este, evident, un studio prestigios și încărcat de istorie, au piane foarte frumoase și din această cauză am ales să mergem acolo. Ne-au pregătit câteva piane pe care le-am încercat și ne-am îndrăgostit de acest pian de operă și am înregistrat versiunile live ale pieselor, a fost minunat! Mi-aș fi dorit să fi înregistrat tot albumul, dar nu am avut timp. Dar într-o zi vom face asta, cu siguranță!
"Ultralife" a fost compus și înregistrat atât în Londra, cât și în New York. Vă place mai mult să compuneți din orașul vostru natal sau vă simțiți mai inspirați atunci când călătoriți?
Anthony: Cred că atunci când scriem în Londra, scriem un anumit tip de piesă, și apoi în New York, altfel de piesă. Mă gândesc că atunci când compui dintr-un mediu familiar cum ar fi casa ta este un proces plin de încărcătură, dar în același timp…e un anumit fel de rutină în modul cum scrii. Așa că e bine să ieși din zona de comfort și să mergi într-un oraș necunoscut.
Un alt loc…
Anthony: Da, poți fi un turist într-o metropolă și chiar funcționează pentru noi. În Londra, ne simțim deja de-ai casei.
Piesa voastră, “Lifetimes”, este despre schimbările climatice. Cum v-a venit această idee neobișnuită?
Josephine: Ne-am uitat la un documentar incredibil, care se numește “Before de flood”, Leonardo DiCaprio a făcut echipă cu National Geographic pentru a-l produce. Și practic s-a plimbat în toată lumea și a examinat impactul schimbărilor climatice asupra planetei. Ne-am uitat la documentar și am fost foarte emoționați, ne gândeam că ar trebui să mâncăm mai puțină carne, să folosim transportul în comun. Să ne gândim la felul în care ne comportăm, cum interacționăm cu lumea și comunitățile noastre.” Am scris o piesă despre aceste schimbări pentru că noi credem că este important să ne folosim vocea artistică și să avem o influență benefică la un anumit nivel. Așa s-a născut “Lifetimes” și este prezentată ca o piesă pop.
Ca un fel de sfat pentru oameni…

Am citit într-un interviu că locuiți și scrieți împreună. Nu este dificil pentru procesul de creație să fiți în aceeași casă aproape tot timpul?
Josephine: Cred că a fi în turneu este cel mai intens, ca mediu de creație, pentru că suntem la un loc cu alți 10 oameni, ca și cum am avea 10 frați și surori tot timpul lângă noi. Turneul este o experiență incredibilă, avem un microbuz, 14 cabine de dormit cu mici perdele, iar dimineața, când o persoană se trezește prima, astăzi a fost rândul meu, îi trezește și pe ceilalți, fiecare scoate capul de după perdea și spunem “Bună dimineața, tuturor!”. E foarte drăguț.
Luna trecută ați lansat un "Making off" despre ultimul vostru album. Sunt curioasă cum v-a venit această idee pentru că totul pare atât de spontan, de natural.
Anthony: Da, avem un prieten, Mike Lee Thomas care a fost regizorul acestui documentar și practic, devine invizibil atunci când ajunge într-un loc…
Josephine: Da, când filmează, nu ca persoană, ca om este minunat.
Anthony: Da, când este în spatele camerei, uităm că este acolo. A reușit să filmeze câteva momente incredibile la care noi nu ne-am fi gândit, care se întâmplau în mod natural și Mike a fost acolo să le surprindă.
Este foarte personal… și natural.
Anthony: Da, exact. Și este unul dintre cei mai buni prieteni ai noștri, deci a fost ușor să pătrundă în lumea noastră.
Îmi puteți spune 3 piese care sunt, în acest moment, în playlistul vostru?
Anthony: “Walrus”, piesa lui D.D. Dumbo, un artist Australian.
Josephine: Sigrid, “Don’t kill my vibe”, e o super piesă. Și încă ascult “A case of you”, a lui Joni Mitchell, o ascult aproape în fiecare zi, este melodia mea preferată din toate timpurile și mă ajută să trec peste anumite momente.

Hi and welcome to Romania! How do you feel?
Josephine: Fantastic, it’s very hot here.
Anthony: We are very excited to be in Romania, it’s our first time.
Your first song got 100.000 plays in just 3 days. Do you remember how you felt in that particular moment?
Josephine: Yeah just very surprised. We have just started our project and uploaded a song to Soundcloud and we didn’t tell anybody about it, we were completely anonymous. The fact that there were 100.000 plays in the first few days we were like “Who are these people?” And then it just kind of built and built and went into the millions and tens of millions and hundread of millions and it was just odd. It was crazy they’re like real people listening. Maybe they are just robots, who knows?
Josephine you used to be a solo artist and Anthony you were part of several bands. How did you guys met and came up with the name Oh Wonder?
Anthony: So we met in London, in a studio and I was pursuing a record for Josephine and then from that point we kind of realized that we wrote really well together as well so we enhance each others writing I guess. It was the main thing. And then Oh Wonder started because Josephine kept bugging me to release. We had one song called “Body Gold”, and she kept saying we should release it, we should release it. So it took me like 2 years to accept her offer and then…yeah… Oh Wonder happened.

You’ve said before that you wanted to write a song for Rihanna. How does it feel now, for both of you, to be in Top Official UK Chart with the album Ultralife?
Josephine: It’s insane, we found like a list of dreams and goals that we made like years ago. One of them was to be part of a Top 10 album and I guess in our minds that would have been like we’ve written a lil bit of one of the songs on someone else’s album. We’ve never dreamt that it would be our own album that we’ve made completely ourselves so it was incredibely humbling and one of the most exciting moments of our careers so far. I still wanna write for Rihanna though, that’s still a dream.
You still have it on your bucket list, right?
Josephine: Yeah!
For your latest album "Ultralife" that signature Oh Wonder sound is clearly more evolved. You experimented with a range variety of genres. How come that you decided to keep the noises from London’s public transport?
Anthony: I think we wanted to experiment more with the sound, we’ve been on tour for 2 years and we were playing with a live drummer and bass player so I think we knew we wanted to develop the sound, to have more musicians on the record. So yeah we took it in the studio with a drummer and a bass player and made it to have more energy I guess. It was the main thing.
How was it like to record the live piano sessions for "High on humans" and Ultralife at the famous Abbey Road Studios?
Josephine: Yeah it was amazing! Abbey Road is obviously prestigious and very historic, they have beautiful pianos which is why we went there. They set up a few pianos for us and we tried them all and fell in love with this opera piano and just recorded these live songs and it was amazing. I wish we could have done the whole album but we didn’t have time. One day we’ll do the whole album for sure.
"Ultralife" was written and recorded in both London and New York. Do you like it more when you create from your hometown or do you feel more inspired when you travel?
Anthony: I think if you write in London, we write one kind of song and then in New York we write a kind of different song and I think writing in a safe environment like your home is very powerful but it’s also…you have kind of a routine of how you write so it’s good to take yourself outside of the box and go to another city.
Another place…
Anthony: Yeah you could be a stranger in a big city which is not how we feel in London. I think we feel too local so yeah it definitely worked for us.
Your song "Lifetimes" is about climate change. How did you come with this unusual idea?
Josephine: We watched an amazing documentary called “Before the flood”, which was Leonardo DiCaprio teaming up with National Geographic and he basically went around the whole world and examined the impact of climate change on the planet. And we watched it and we were like so moved by it and I was like “Oh we need to eat less meat and use less public transport and really think about how we behave and how we interact with the world and our communities.” So, we were just really moved and wrote a song about climate change because I think it’s important to use that little voice you have to try and affect good on some level. And that’s where “Lifetimes” came from but it’s like disguised in a pop song.
Like a piece of advice to people…
I’ve read in an interview that you live and also write together. Is it sometimes difficult for the creative process to be in the same house almost all the time?
Josephine: I think touring is the more intense environment because we’re on tour with 10 other people, it’s like having 10 brothers and sisters all the time running around. Touring is amazing you have like a tour bus, 14 bunks with littler curtains and in the morning if one person along goes up, this morning was my turn and I wake everyone up and then everybody is like… pops their heads up from these little curtains and is just like “Good morning everyone!”. It’s really cute.
Last month you released a documentary about the making off your latest album. I’m curious how did you come up with this idea? Everything seems so natural and spontaneous.
Anthony: Yeah, we have this friend Mike Lee Thomas who’s the director of the documentary and he’s basically invisible if he gets into a place…
Josephine: Only when he’s filming not as a person, as a human he’s amazing.
Anthony: Yeah, when he’s beyond the camera we kinda forget he’s there. He managed to capture some amazing moments that we didn’t really think about it, that were just happening naturally and Mike was there to catch them.
Is very personal…and natural
Anthony: Yeah, exactly. And he’s one of our best friends so it was easy to let him into our world.
