Unii dintre voi lucrează în spitale și în același timp faceți și muzică. Ce vindecați prin cântecele voastre?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): Nu sunt sigur cât vindecă pe alții, dar pentru mine sigur are un efect terapeutic. Am o mare nevoie să mă exprim creativ, iar muzica este mijlocul perfect prin care pot să fac asta. Așa că pot să spun că în felul acesta viața mea este echilibrată, îmi ține mintea sănătoasă.
Sunteți din țări diferite, faceți parte din culturi diferite. Cum ați reușit să le puneți laolaltă pentru a crea trupa?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): Este ușor pentru că muzica nu cunoaște bariere, pur și simplu este peste tot. Acesta este unul dintre cele mai frumoase lucururi pe care le poate face muzica, să aducă împreuna oameni și culturi diferite și dacă merge, merge. Limba pe care o vorbești, țara din care provii nu mai au importanță.
Cum v-ați găsit ritmul, limbajul comun?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): Cum ne-am găsit ritmul? Ca trupă, cred că nu-ți alegi ritmul... alegi notele, dar ritmul vine din biblioteca muzicală pe care o ai integrată în tine, de-a lungul vieții, din locurile prin care ai fost. Nouă ne place muzica soul, iubim acele ritmuri vechi de blues, groove music. Și separat, fiecare are gusturile sale legate de muzică Magnus asculta R’n’b, Ian preferă Spanish music & disco iar Geri ascultă tot, de la hip-hop la indie. Așa că toate ritmurile noastre se întâlnesc și dau naștere unui mix aparte, ritmul Mongooz.
“Freedom, unchain your soul, be who you want” sunt versurile unei piese de la voi. Cine vreți să fiți?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): Pot să spun în numele meu...că vreau să mă simt împlinit. Să trăiesc o viață echilibrată în care să mă simt liber să iau decizii, să fiu înconjurat de oamenii pe care-i iubesc și mereu să am un țel spre care să tind.
“Please be naked” este un album de-al voastru. Este dificil să fiți goi în fața publicului, să fiți fără măștile în spatele cărora ne ascundem cu toții și să fiți reali?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): Da, este înfricoșător să fii onest și vulnerabil. Dar în momentul în care încetezi să mai fii tu insuți, publicul simte asta. Sunt convins că singura modalitate prin care poți reuși atât în viață cât și în muzică este să fii cinstit cu tine și veridic. Și noi asta încercăm.
Ce vă inspiră piesele? Muzica voastră este despre sentimente, despre relații, despre tot ce este uman. Frânturi din viața voastră se regăsesc în cântecele pe care le creați?
Mongooz and the Magnet: Asta cu siguranță. Marea parte a cântecelor au ca punct de plecare povești, sentimente, reacții la anumite lucruri care ni s-au întâmplat la un moment dat. Dacă simți ceva, acel Ceva sigur va apărea într-un cântec. Când vine momentul să creezi un album, atunci devine interesant, pentru că trebuie să pui cap la cap toate acele momente și fragmente diferite din viețile tututor și să le unești, să le dai un sens. Uneori iese ceva, alteori nu prea, hahaha.
Dacă ați fi trăit într-o altă perioadă, cu ce trupă v-ar fi plăcut să urcați pe scenă?
Mongooz and the Magnet: Probabil cu Oasis, par niște tipi cu picioarele pe pământ. Sau cu James Brown, care pare un tip de treabă. Mă mai gândesc la un turneu cu Rolling Stones prin anii '60, în perioada de început rock and roll, cu nebunia Blues Revival. Era pe atunci un apetit extraordinar pentru muzica brută. Ea era prețuită pentru onestitate și nu se căuta ceva superficial.
Visul vostru este să cuceriți lumea. Ce veți face după...?
Mongooz and the Magnet: Haha, cred că partea asta legată de cucerirea lumii ne va ține ocupați o perioadă bună de timp. Da, este un țel, dar povestea nu se termină acolo. Să vrei să fii mai bun, din ce în ce mai bun și apoi lumea se face tot mai mare și tu vrei să fii la fel. Așa că termenul nostru de garanție va expira înainte ca lumea să fie a noastră.
Dacă ar fi să vă descrieți cuiva care nu v-a ascultat nicio piesă, ce i-ați spune despre Mongooz and the Magnet?
Mongooz and the Magnet: Mereu am avut probleme în a ne descrie.....ceea ce cred că este în regulă pentru că noi nu suntem ca ceilalți. Dar i-aș spune că noi cântăm rock and roll, sau Hendrix-pop sau rhythm-and-blues pentru secolul 21, American roots-inspired groovy music care să te facă să dansezi și să urli de fericire.

Mongooz and the Magnet: “The only way you can really succeed in this business and in life is with honesty”
They are young, they love music and they play groove rock and roll, or Hendrix-pop, or rhythm-and-blues for the 21st century, some American roots-inspired groovy music to make us dance and cry. They are Mongooz and the Magnet, a trio (one from Norway, one from Ireland and one from Hungary) that loves “to leave the audience tapping their feet, grinding their bodies and throwing things out the window” as they describe themselves. They came to Romania, for a few concerts, but unfortunately not in Bucharest. Maybe next time, guys…..
You work in hospitals and make music. Do you heal something with your music too?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): I’m not sure how much it heals anybody else, but its for sure it has a healing effect on me. I have a need to express myself creatively and music is my outlet for that. So in a way it keeps my life in balance, keeps me sane.
You are all from different countries, different cultures. How did you manage to put them together and create the band?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): It’s easy ‘cause music has no clear borders, its all very fluid. That’s one of the things I love about music, it brings different people and cultures together. You just get together, and if it works it works. Doesn’t matter which country you are from or the language you speak.
How did you find your rhythm?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): How we found our rhythm? As a band I think you don’t really choose your rhythm.. you can pick the notes, but the rhythm comes from the library of music you listened to in your life, the places you’ve been… we all love American music soul, old rhythm and blues, groove music, as well as we each have our own individual music interests. Magnus is into R’n’b, Ian likes Spanish music & disco and Geri is into everything from hip-hop to indie. So I guess all our own rhythms come together and make some kind of mixed-up, special Mongooz rhythm
“Freedom, unchain your soul, be who you want” are lyrics from one of your songs. Who do you want to be?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): I can only speak for myself... I want to be fulfilled, live a balanced a life, where I am free to make my own decision, be surrounded by people I love, and always have a purpose I work towards to.
“Please be naked” is an album of yours. Is it difficult to be naked in front of the audience, to play without masks and be true?
Magnus (Mongooz and the Magnet): Yes, it’s scary to be honest and vulnerable. But the moment you can’t be yourself, people will feel it. I think the only way you can really succeed in this business and in life is with honesty, and this is something we try to achieve
What inspires you to create the songs? Your music is about feelings, about relationships and other human stuff. Is your life present in each song?
Mongooz and the Magnet: Yeah for sure… the majority of songs we wrote just came from stories, and feelings, reactions to things that happened in our life. If you’re feeling down sometimes it comes out in a song. When you come to make an album then it’s interesting because you’re stitching together lots of different moments and fragments from different times in our lives, and trying to make one big package out of it. I guess sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, haha.
If you had lived in a different period of time, what band would you have loved to play with?
Mongooz and the Magnet: Probably Oasis, they seem like pretty nice down to earth guys. Or James Brown, also quite an approachable guy… I think actually to tour with Rolling Stones back in the early 60s, when rock and roll was just starting, the Blues Revival was going on, music was being let off the chain and people just couldn’t contain themselves. Music was being finally being recorded and valued for it’s honesty and rawness, not just to be a bourgeois, manicured, curated and elitist for of ‘acceptable' music.
Your dream is to conquer the world. And after that?
Mongooz and the Magnet: Haha, world conquering should keep us busy for a while. I mean it's a goal but then again a never-ending one… get bigger and better. And then the world gets bigger. And then you have to get bigger. So we’ll probably expire long before the whole world is ours.
If you had to describe yourself to someone who never heard your songs, what would you tell about Mongooz and the Magnet?
Mongooz and the Magnet: We always had trouble with describing ourselves, which we think is a good thing, because we aren’t exactly like anyone else. But we say that we play groove rock and roll, or Hendrix-pop, or rhythm-and-blues for the 21st century, American roots-inspired groovy music to make us dance and cry.
