Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Salut băieți și bine ați venit în România! Cum vă simțiți aici?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Foarte bine, e drăguț, e cald, nu plouă. Oamenii sunt de treabă, abia așteptăm să cântăm la festival.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): “Follow you fire” mă face să mă gândesc la toți oamenii pe care i-am iubit și unde se află ei acum. La ce v-ați gândit când ați scris piesa?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Steve, solistul, a scris versurile și cred că vorbește despre o relație mai veche pe care a avut-o, se întreabă, probabil, același lucru, unde este persoana respectivă și dacă a reușit să facă toate lucrurile pe care și le-a propus atunci. Dacă s-a dus la facultate, dacă are jobul pe care și l-a dorit, dacă și-a urmat visul, deci da, cred că despre asta e vorba în piesă.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Noul vostru album, “Politics of Living”, va fi lansat în luna septembrie. Ce ne puteți spune despre el?
Jason Boland (Kodaline): Pe 28 septembrie, da, e un album de care suntem tare încântați pentru că are piese care puteau fi pe primul disc și piese care puteau fi pe al doilea, așa că noi credem că oricine ne știa muzica, se va bucura de el. Avem melodii care sunt cu totul diferite, am lucrat cu oameni cool, care au colaborat la rândul lor cu unii dintre cei mai buni artiști din lume, a fost o experiență foarte frumoasă, deși a durat mai mult decât ne așteptam inițial. În final, a meritat.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Trupa voastră se numea înainte "21 Demands". De ce ați schimbat numele sau care a fost ideea din spate?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Vezi tu, l-am schimbat fiindcă era foarte, foarte prost.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Eu cred că era drăguț.
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Ți-a plăcut?
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Da…
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Poate o să îl schimbăm la loc într-o zi. A fost numele trupei noastre când aveam 16 ani și ne-am apucat de muzică. De fapt, fratele lui Steve a ales "21 Demands" și am tot schimbat membrii trupei și muzica s-a schimbat și ea în totalitate. Trupa s-a destrămat, însă noi am tot compus piese, l-am cunoscut pe Jay, aveam muzică nouă și am simțit că este un nou început, așa că ne-a venit în minte Kodaline și de acolo lucrurile au început să se miște în direcția bună.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Videoclipurile pieselor “All I want”, partea întâi și partea a doua, sunt foarte frumoase. Îmi aduc aminte când le-am văzut prima dată, au trezit niște emoții puternice în mine. Credeți că trăim într-o lume în care punem etichete oamenilor, în funcție de prima impresie?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Aș vrea să cred că nu, însă probabil mulți oameni fac deja asta.
Jason Boland (Kodaline): Mai ales odată cu social media, poți să ratezi oameni imediat, să treci pe lângă ei pe stradă și să presupui că sunt într-un fel sau în altul. În videoclip am vrut să arătăm că oamenii sunt mult mai profunzi de atât. Cred că în inimile noastre încă ne înțelegem unii pe ceilalți, înțelegem oamenii. Nu cred că judecăm atât de aspru, din prima, dar cred că prima impresie e greu de schimbat.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Ați avut câteva colaborări cu Kygo. Cum v-ați cunoscut?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Ne-am întâlnit după ce a fost lansată piesa, care a fost scrisă de James Bay de fapt. Am fost în turneu cu James Bay, e un bun prieten de al nostru, el a compus melodia și suntem la aceeași casă de discuri. Lucrurile s-au legat pur și simplu, ni s-a propus colaborarea, Steve a fost în studio, nu cu Kygo, separat, și apoi melodia a fost inclusă pe album. Kygo ne-a propus să cântăm live, așa că am fost în Londra, la Brixton Academy și am văzut că e un muzician extraordinar live. Mulți oameni privesc DJ-ii într-un anumit fel, au un laptop și nu fac nimic. El e diferit. Am fost absolut impresionat de talentul lui ca pianist, Steve a fost la multe concerte alături de el, este un tip de treabă, deși are atât de mult succes și a devenit unul dintre cei mai mari DJ din lume, încă este un om cu picioarele pe pământ. Toată experiența a fost interesantă, să lucrezi cu un DJ superstar, fără să simți că lucrezi cu un DJ superstar.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Cum ar arăta o lume perfecta pentru tine?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Un festival în România, unde nu plouă. Oriunde putem cânta, este perfect pentru noi. E o nebunie faptul că încă mai putem face asta.
Jason Boland (Kodaline): Dacă o să cântăm și peste 10-15 ani… așa arată lumea perfectă.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Piesele voastre sunt poetice și nostalgice în același timp.
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Și siropoase cum ai zis înainte. Mulțumim pentru asta.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Într-un sens bun.
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Desigur, ne plac lucrurile siropoase.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Și mie. Vă inspirați din poveștile voastre de viață?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Destul de mult. În general totul vine dintr-o întâmplare reală, ceva ce ni s-a întâmplat, cred că atunci reușești să compui o piesă fără să încerci, atunci când pur și simplu vin versurile spre deosebire de momentul când stai jos și încerci să te gândești despre ce vrei să scrii. Cânți la pian sau la chitara acustică și te gândești la un subiect, începi să cânți fără să ai versuri clare, pur și simplu, “se scurg” din tine. Cred că atunci ies cele mai bune piese. E ca și cum subconștientul tău preia controlul.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Ce artist sau trupă v-au inspirat în adolescență?
Jason Boland (Kodaline): Sunt atât de multe, cred că venind din Irlanda, cu o moștenire muzicală atât de bogată, trupe precum U2 sau Snow Patrol, o formație care se numește The Frames, foarte cunoscută în Irlanda, m-au influențat foarte tare, doar ideea că patru băieți pot cânta în toată lumea, să vedem trupe care au reușit asta, ne-au făcut să credem că totul este posibil.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Ce piesă vă vine în cap, pe care o ascultați atunci când erați mici? Care pur și simplu a rămas în mintea voastră.
Jason Boland (Kodaline): Spice Girls – “2 become 1”.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Cred că se reunesc.
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Da, am auzit asta. Ar fi incredibil, mi-ar plăcea să le văd live. Spice Girls for life!
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Băieți, vă mulțumesc și vă doresc mult succes diseară. Mi-a făcut plăcere să vă cunosc.

Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Hi guys and welcome to Romania! How do you feel here?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Really good, it’s nice and warm, not raining. People are nice, can’t wait to play at the festival.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): "Follow your fire" makes me think about all the people I loved and where are they now. What did you have in mind when you wrote that song?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): It was Steve that wrote the song, the singer, I think it’s about an old relationship he had and he was kind of probably the same thing, asking the question where are they now and wondering if they did all of the things they said they were gonna do. If they said they were gonna go to college and have this job, if they did that, did they followed their dream so yeah it’s about following your dreams I suppose.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Your new album "Politics of Living" will be out this September. What can you tell us about the album?
Jason Boland (Kodaline): The 28th of September, it’s a really exciting album for us because it’s got songs that could be on the first record or the second record, so we think anyone who has heard us so far will really like it and there’s also stuff that’s completely new so yeah, there’s a lot in there and we worked with really cool people who’ve worked with some of the best people in the world, it was a really good experience, took us a bit longer than we meanted to but I think it’s paid off in the end.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Your band was previously called 21 Demands. Why did you change the name or what was the idea behind it?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Well we’ve changed it because that was a really bad, bad name...
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): I think it was nice!
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Did you like it?
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Yeah…
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Maybe we’lle change it back someday. That was our band name when I think we were like 16 we started that and it was actually Steve’s brother that chose 21 Demands and we kind of changed band members around and the music completely changed. We stopped that band but we kept writing music and then we got Jay and had a whole new collection of songs, it felt like a fresh start and Kodaline came and as soon as that name happened, everything started to happen as well so it was kind of just like a new beginning I think.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): "All I want" videos are really beautiful. I remember the first time I saw them they made me really emotional. Do you think that we live in this world where we judge people by the first impression?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): I’d like to think not, but I think a lot of people do.
Jason Boland (Kodaline): I think especially with social media you can scroll pass people so quickly and you just pass people by in the street and assume that they are in a certain way and I think the key of that video is that everyone is a deeper person than that. I think in the heart we still understand each other, understand people. I don’t think people just write people off on the first look, but I think the first impression is hard to break.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): You had a few collaborations with Kygo. How did you guys met him?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): We met him afterwards, that song was written by James Bay. So we toured with James Bay a lot and he was a friend of ours and he actually wrote the song and we got the same record label. It just kind of happened that we were asked to feature so Steve went to the studio, not with Kyo, separately, and then it just appeared on the album and then he asked us to play live with him so we played a concert in London in a place called Brixton Academy and he’s like…a lot of people look at EDM DJ’s and you know a lot of them do nothing, you know, they’ve got like a laptop... but he actually plays live and he’s an amazing musician. I was kind of blown away by how talented he was on piano and stuff, but Steve played a lot of concerts with him, he’s a really nice guy, for all the success he had, he’s kind of become one of the biggest acts in the world, he’s still really, really down to earth. The whole thing was really nice, it was nice to work with a superstar DJ without feeling like you’re working with a superstar DJ.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): How would "a perfect world" look like for you?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): A festival in Romania, where it doesn’t rain. Anywhere that we’re playing music for us is perfect, you know. The fact that we can still do it after this long is pretty crazy.
Jason Boland (Kodaline): If we could be doing this in 10-15 years that’s the perfect world.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): Your songs are poetic and nostalgic at the same time.
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): And cheesy as you said. Thanks for that.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): In a good way.
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Yeah of course, we like cheesy.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): I like cheesy too. Do you take inspiration from your personal stories?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Pretty much. Everything comes from a real life event or something that’s happened to one of us, I think of that’s when you kind of write a song without trying, that’s when the lyrics kind of come out as opposed to sitting down and trying to think what we’re gonna write this song about. We’re playing piano or acoustic guitar and you just start thinking of a subject and you sing without thinking the words, they kind of just fall out of you; that’s kind of when the best songs come. It’s kind of your subconscious takes over.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): What artist or band inspired you when you were a teenager growing up?
Jason Boland (Kodaline): There’s so many, I think, coming from Irland, we come from such a rich heritage of incredible bands like the U2 and Snow Patrol and there’s a band called The Frames, big Irish band and that was a huge influence on me and just the idea that four lads from Irland can go and play all over the world, just seeing other bands do that made us feel like this is possible, this is a real thing.
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): What’s the song that you remember from when you were a little kid that yout remember? That got stuck with you?
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Spice Girls - "2 become 1".
Ingrid Ispas (InfoMusic): I think they’re reuniting or something.
Mark Prendergast (Kodaline): Yeah, I heard that. That would be amazing, I’d love to see them live. Spice Girls for life!
