Hannah Williams a fost descrisă ca fiind o tornadă din care irump dragostea, pasiunea şi furia. Albumul de succes, „A Hill of Feathers”, din 2012, alături de The Tastemakers, a propulsat bandul în sufletele multora, iar single-ul „Work it Out” a avut mai mult de 1 milion de vizualizari pe Youtube. După o scurtă pauză, HANNAH WILLIAMS & the Affirmations au anunţat noul album, primul single "Tame in the Water" fiind lansat pe 23 septembrie 2016.
Infomusic: Hannah, cânţi de când te ştii. Nici nu puteai să citeşti şi erai în stare să simţi muzica. Ai crescut într-o familie în care muzica era extrem de importantă. Îţi poţi imagina o viaţă fără muzică?
Hannah Williams: O viaţă fără muzică? Mai degrabă aş muri. Ea este totul pentru mine.
Infomusic: Îţi mai aduci aminte cum a fost prima oară când ai urcat pe scenă?
Hannah Williams: Ei bine, am fost pe scenă de când mă ştiu. Tata a fost preot protestant şi asta mi-a permis să descopăr muzica în biserică. Mi-e foarte vie amintirea primului meu solo în cadrul unei slujbe la biserică. Atunci a fost un moment decisiv pentru mine, când mi-am dat seama că am aceste daruri, vocea şi o familie incredibilă, care să mă încurajeze şi să-mi însoţească pasiunea pe mai departe.
Infomusic: Dintotdeauna ţi-ai dorit să cânţi. Dacă asta nu s-ar fi întâmplat, ce altceva ar fi făcut Hannah Williams? La ce crezi că ai fi excelat?
Hannah Williams: Nu ştiu...nu cred că excelez la prea mult. Poate aş fi fost chef. Îmi place la nebunie să gătesc. Când eram copil, aveam un vis...să deţin ceva de genul vegetarian, opera cafe (da, am dorit să fiu cântăreaţă de operă până pe la vârsta de 12 ani)...unde artiştii să vină să cânte, să aibă orice acte artistice în timp ce s-ar fi bucurat de bunătăţile bucătăriei vegetariene. Încă mai cred că ar fi o idee super.
Infomusic: Ai avut un album extraordinar alături de The Tastemakers, în 2012. Într-un interviu de acum câţiva ani, tu ai descris Hannah Williams & the Tastemakers ca fiind “A fired up, emotional, gut wrenching, heart breaking, dance floor shaking injection of all original, Raw Soul from the UK”. Cum a fost colaborarea cu ei?
Hannah Williams: The Tastemakers au evoluat în ceea ce astăzi avem ca fiind The Affirmations. A fost o incredibilă călătorie. Cand am decis să mă retrag pentru o perioadă, pentru a avea un copil, chitaristul si songwriter-ul meu a ales un alt proiect- Ephemerals. Vorbim despre un soul band în care se regăsesc James şi Adam Holgate. Atunci am crezut că într-adevăr s-a terminat totul, dar restul bandului chiar şi-a dorit ca noi să continuăm şi asta m-a determinat şi pe mine să vreau să merg mai departe. James a început să scrie pentru mine şi mi-am dat seama că viitorul era promiţător. Cei care mai rămăseseră din The Tastemakers au stat cu noi o perioadă, după care şi lor li s-au ivit alte oportunităţi şi fiecare a ales drumul său. Am rămas prieteni şi-i iubesc mult de tot. Ne-am gandit luni bune la un nou nume pentru trupă, dar niciunul nu părea să fie potrivit. Aşa că am aruncat lista şi am ales cuvantul care întrupa, într-un fel ceea ce făcea trupa pentru mine, mă AFIRMA. Cei din trupă îmi afirmă credinţele, emoţiile, arta, cuvintele....tot. Sunt o persoană extrem de anxioasă. Mereu îmi fac griji pentru tot. Băieţii mă ajută să-mi canalizez toată această teamă în ceea ce fac pe scenă. Mai ales atunci când suntem în turneu şi mi se face dor de familie.
Infomusic: Cineva obişnuia să spună că muzica adevărată este precum sângele, se simte în venele artistului. Aşa este şi la tine?... Pentru că tu pari să simţi fiecare notă cu toată fiinţa …
Hannah Williams: Este, într adevăr, o experienţă holistică. De fiecare dată când urc pe scenă este ceva nou, altceva decât orice alt spectacol de dinainte. De aceea spectacolele noastre live sunt atât de reale. Bineînţeles că exersăm din greu şi planificăm în detaliu tot ce se întâmplă pe scenă....dar „sângele care ne curge în vene” preia oarecum controlul şi aduce acel CEVA necesar muzicii bune. Simt fiecare notă.
Infomusic: Cu toţii ştim că versurile care ating cel mai bine inimile ascultătorilor vin din experiențele personale. Îţi pui inima şi sufletul în ceea ce cânti?
Hannah Williams: Da. Totul este despre experienţele, pierderile şi dezamăgirile mele, care sunt parte din mine chiar şi după mulţi ani. Este extrem de important să priveşti în tine şi să creezi ceva care l-ar face pe asculător să empatizeze cu ceea ce aude, dar mai întâi trebuie să privesc adânc în mine şi să descopăr acel Ceva şi să SIMT. Sunt norocoasă că am câţiva prieteni care au scris pentru mine piese extraordinare cu care m-am identificat imediat şi asta a contat.
Infomusic: Dacă ar trebui să-ţi promovezi noul album, „Late Nights & Heartbreak”, ce cuvinte ai folosi?
Hannah Williams: Plin de forţă, surprinzător, „psychedelic soul with kickass grooves and gospel inspired indulgent vocals”.
Infomusic: Ai o voce unică şi plină de forţă şi ori de câte ori urci pe scenă, parcă-i ascultăm pe Etta James, James Brown, Minnie Ripperton, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Charles Bradley, Freddy Mercury sau Sharon Jones, artiştii pe care tu-i adori. Îi vei păstra şi de acum încolo sau gusturile se vor schimba?
Hannah Williams: Bineînţeles. Mă inspir în mod constant de la alţi artişti, iau de la ei puterea, unicitatea şi în primul rând pasiunea pe care o au când fac muzică. Când a murit Sharon Jones, am scris asta... „Sunt devastată că mi-am pierdut eroul, modelul, dar ea va continua să mă inspire mereu şi de acum încolo. RIP, dragă Sharon”.

She has worked at the University of Winchester for 10 years, she’s the creative director of a department of music, working with talented students, spends her days with rehearsals and other musical events, has a wonderful family and besides all, goes onstage and has incredible shows with The Affirmations. She is Hannah Williams, a voice that was noticed in 2012, along with the album "A Hill of Feathers", alongside The Tastemakers. Now she has just released a new album, "Late Nights & Heartbreak". She told us more in a short interview via email.
Infomusic: First of all, Hannah, you have been singing for all your life. You couldn’t read, but you were able to feel the music. You grew up in a family where music was very important. Can you imagine your life without music?
Hannah Williams: A life without music???? I'd rather be dead. It's my everything.
Infomusic: Do you remember the first time you were on a stage? How was it?
Hannah Williams: Well, I have been 'performing' since I was very young. My father was a Protestant priest and I found music in church. I vividly remember my first solo during a church service. It was a defining moment when I realised I had been given the gifts of a voice and an incredible family to drive me forward and encourage my passion.
Infomusic: You always wanted to be a singer. If this hadn’t happened, what would Hannah be doing? What else do you think you would have been great at?
Hannah Williams: I mean....I don't think I'm very good at many other things really. Maybe a chef??? I love to cook. When I was a child, I had a dream of owning a vegetarian, opera cafe (I wanted to be an opera singer when I was around 9-12 years old), where artists could come to sing, play and develop their skills whilst enjoying contemporary vegetarian cuisine. I still think that sounds like a cool venue idea.
Infomusic: You had a great album with The Tastemakers, in 2012. In an interview, a few years ago, you introduced Hannah Williams & the Tastemakers as “A fired up, emotional, gut wrenching, heart breaking, dance floor shaking injection of all original, Raw Soul from the UK”. How can you describe that experience of yours?
Hannah Williams: The Tastemakers have evolved into the Affirmations. It's been a progressive and incredible journey. When I took some time out to have my little boy, my previous songwriter and guitarist moved on to his new project, Ephemerals. A fantastic soul band in which James and Adam Holgate also play. I thought "maybe that's the end" but the rest of the band really wanted to carry on. This was a really affirming and loving gesture which drove me to want to keep going. James started writing for me and I knew we had a really promising future within our reach. The remaining Tastemakers stayed with us for some time but then, other opportunities presented themselves in their lives and they moved on. It was all amicable and I love them all very dearly. James then reformed the band out of his musical network in Bristol. We toured as Tastemakers until very recently but, it felt right to acknowledge both their difference as a line up and their impact on me as an artist.
We laboured hard over finding a new name for the band for months on end and nothing on the list felt right. So we burned the list and I found the word that epitomised the way the guys make ME feel. They affirm me. They affirm my beliefs, my emotions, my art, my words...everything. I am an extremely anxious person. I worry all the time about...well everything. My guys help me to channel all of that worry into my performance. Especially when we are on tour and I miss my family so deeply.
Infomusic: Someone used to say that good and true music is like blood, running through the singer’s veins. Is it the same for you too? Because you seem to feel music with all your body…
Hannah Williams: It's a totally holistic experience. Every time we get onstage, something is different from the time before. Our live performances are very real. Of course we practice super hard and we plan our set but....the "blood in all of our veins" takes over and adds the "other" to our music. I feel every note. I want to please you with every note.
Infomusic: We all know that great lyrics come from personal experiences. Do you put all your heart and soul in your songs?
Hannah Williams: Yes. Still in my head is about my own deep, personal loss and hurt which is still pat of me after many years. It's important to look outward and create something that the listener can empathise with but to begin, I have to look inside myself and discover something I can really get my teeth into and FEEL. I am lucky to have a bunch of friends who have written me some truly beautiful, moving and inspirational songs which I immediately connected with. That's the key really.
Infomusic: If you had to promote your new album, "Late Nights & Heartbreak" what words would you choose for it?
Hannah Williams: Powerful, surprising, psychedelic soul with kickass grooves and gospel inspired indulgent vocals.
Infomusic: You seem to have a very powerful and unique voice and we can recognize all the singers you adore, from Etta James, James Brown, Minnie Ripperton, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Charles Bradley, Freddy Mercury or Sharon Jones, in all your performances. Will you keep them with The Affirmations or you intend to change something?
Hannah Williams: Of course. I am continuously inspired by other artists. Their power, their uniqueness and above all, their passion for what they do. Making music for good. I wrote this on the sad day that Sharon Jones passed on. “I am devastated to have lost my hero but she will continue to inspire me and her strength and legacy love on in us all. RIP Darling Sharon”.
