Bună! Pentru puțin.

Sărbătoriți 25 de ani de la lansarea albumului ”Images and Words”, care a marcat un moment foarte important în istoria trupei. Ne-ai putea împărtăși câteva amintiri din perioada înregistrării discului?

Am intrat în studio pentru a înregistra "Images and Words" în octombrie '91 și eram extrem de încântați și nerăbdători. Eram cu toții foarte tineri și foarte emoționați, urma să înregistrăm un album pentru o reputată casă de discuri. Știam, adică credeam 100% în muzica pe care urma să o înregistrăm, care, evident, a devenit ulterior "Images and Words". Era acea camaraderie între membrii trupei, eram cu toții foarte apropiați unul de celălalt, și tot ce a contat a fost muzica, acel moment în studio. Ne-am distrat foarte tare. A fost un proces interesant, pentru că pe măsură ce înaintam cu înregistrările, puteam auzi cum se conturează totul și era cu adevărat palpitant. Ne rugam ca ceea ce înregistrăm să răspundă așteptărilor fanilor de peste tot din lume. Și din fericire pentru noi, a devenit hit și a generat un succes la nivel internațional.

În ce mod s-au schimbat ascultătorii și muzica de la momentul lansării albumului ”Images and Words”?

Evident, am înregistrat multe alte albume de la ”Images and Words” încoace. Cred că reacțiile depind întotdeauna de tipul de album pe care îl lansăm. Fanii noștri, în general, sunt împărțiți în două mari grupuri: unul este format din ascultătorii de progresiv, iar ceilalți sunt iubitorii de metal, pentru că în definitiv suntem o trupă de metal progresiv. Dacă un album înclină mai mult spre latura metal, sau mai agresivă, primim un răspuns mult mai înflăcărat din partea fanilor metal. Dacă albumul se întâmplă să fie mai mult în zona de progresiv, atunci primim semnale de la fanii înrăiți ai progresivului. Întotdeauna feedback-ul este polarizat de o parte sau de alta, de la album la album, în funcție de ceea ce lansăm. Noi încercăm mereu să menținem un echilibru între cele două elemente predominante ale muzicii noastre, metalul și progresivul, dar știi cum e, uneori înclinăm balanța mai mult într-o parte sau alta. Dar privind în perspectivă, eu cred că este important ca noi să încercăm mereu să ne autodepășim, să încercăm, într-o anumită măsură, să ne reinventăm și să realizăm ceva ieșit din tipare și ceva care să creeze un nou vibe și să arate că noi continuăm să creștem și să evoluăm ca trupă. Și cred că acesta este ingredientul de care are nevoie o formație pentru a rezista și a avea o carieră de lungă durată. E această capacitate de a împrospăta sound-ul de la un album la altul și de a crea ceva nou. Da :)

De care dintre realizările trupei Dream Theater te simți cel mai mândru?

Per total, sunt destul de mândru de tot ce am făcut până acum. Dacă e să vorbim despre fiecare album în parte, cred că albumele care m-au atins pe mine într-un mod profund sunt ”Images and Words”, ”Scenes from a Memory”, ”Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence”, ”A Dramatic Turn of Events” și ”The Astonishing”. Cred că acestea sunt albumele care, în cazul meu, au atins o coardă sensibilă, iar pentru mine, ele au avut ceva foarte important de transmis, ceva foarte curajos, din punct de vedere muzical.

Faceți muzică de peste 30 de ani. Dacă ați avea oportunitatea de a face totul din nou, ați schimba ceva sau ați face totul exact la fel?

Nu, nu aș schimba nimic, pentru că tot ceea ce am făcut are o anume semnificație. Nu cred că ar fi existat o altă abordare pentru a ajunge aici, la ceea ce reprezentăm acum, din punct de vedere muzical. Cred că ne-am jucat cărțile bine, ca să spun așa. Ăsta este motivul pentru care eu, de exemplu, am o trupă solo. Înregistrez albumele mele solo pentru că este un prilej pentru mine de a crea altfel de muzică, diferită de sound-ul Dream Theater. Există similarități, dar mi-a oferit accesul către un alt mediu, care să-mi permită să mă exprim în alte moduri din punct de vedere muzical. Asta denotă diversitate. Dar în ce privește parcursul Dream Theater, cred că ceea ce am făcut, și unde suntem acum, și modul în care am trecut de la un album la altul și am crescut, cred că totul a fost necesar pentru a ne păstra așa cum am fost mereu și cum vom continua să fim. Așa că ăsta ar fi răspunsul, nu văd cum am fi putut să schimbăm ceva sau să abordăm lucrurile diferit.

Ce aspect al vieții de muzician îți place cel mai mult?

Totul. Procesul de compunere a pieselor este foarte interesant, pentru că poți vedea cum se ajunge la forma finisată. Apoi urmează procesul de înregistrare, care este emoționant pentru că poți să auzi totul cum sună atunci când e gata. Și apoi vin reacțiile fanilor, o altă parte foarte bună a întregului pe care îl investești în crearea muzicii și a noilor lansări, e răspunsul la ceea ce ai făcut, reacția fanilor de peste tot din lume. Și în final, urci pe scenă și cânți acea muzică live, intri în conexiune cu fanii și primești acea energie. Nu există niciun alt mediu ca acesta, e de nedescris. Un sentiment fantastic. Cred că întregul proces, așa cum este el, îți imprimă o amintire ce nu poate fi ștearsă. Totul este necesar pentru imaginea de ansamblu.

Cum te distrezi în timpul liber?

Îmi place să mă plimb cu barca. Îmi plac drumețiile, campingul, ciclismul. Îmi place să merg la ski. Îmi place să mă relaxez în familie, să ies cu prietenii, să citesc. Ce ar mai fi....cred că asta e tot. Îmi place foarte mult să fac toate lucrurile astea.

Cine te-a influențat, atunci când trupa era la început, și pe cine admiri acum?

Persoana care m-a influențat cel mai mult, din punct de vedere vocal, a fost întotdeauna Freddy Mercury. Au fost mulți vocaliști pe care îi ascultam cu plăcere, în perioada copilăriei și adolescenței, dar pot să spun că Freddy Mercury a fost mereu preferatul meu. A fost unic, nu a mai fost nimeni ca el, un om incredibil de talentat, cu o voce absolut fenomenală. Așa că da, aș spune că el este omul care m-a influențat și m-a inspirat să devin solist vocal. Cred că dacă e să iau în considerare tot ce a fost, totul s-a întâmplat așa cum am vrut. Și cred că am fost cu toții foarte norocoși să facem asta de mai bine de 25 de ani și să ne simțim, încă, foarte bine făcând asta.

E vreun vocalist de metal pe care îl admiri acum? Unul contemporan.

Aș spune că...întotdeauna mi-a plăcut Rob Halford (Judas Priest), din zona de metal. Are o voce grozavă. Ronnie James Dio, Robert Plant m-au influențat foarte mult în tinerețe. Aerosmith în perioada de început, cu Steven Tyler, care are un timbru unic. Ian Gillan, de la Deep Purple. Vocaliști de metal contemporani...nu știu... mă lovesc de un spațiu gol. Nu prea mai ascult atât de mult metal acum. Îmi place de Matt, de la Muse, are o voce foarte bună. Sunt mulți vocaliști buni.

Ultimul album, „The Astonishing”, a urcat pe prima poziție în US Billboard Rock Chart. Felicitări pentru asta! Ce crezi că a captat atenția publicului?

Mulțumim. Cred că un motiv este faptul că am abordat albumul într-un mod foarte teatral. Este un album conceptual, așa că spune o poveste, este foarte dinamic, din punct de vedere muzical, și cred că asta captează atenția fanilor stilului progresiv și ai iubitorilor clasici ai acestui gen de muzică, deși sunt pe alocuri și pasaje mai heavy. Dar cred că principalul motiv este faptul că spune o poveste, asta, în sine, este intrigant, iar muzica este încărcată de emoție. Cred că piesele sunt foarte puternice, atât muzical, cât și vocal, și asta a făcut ca albumul să ajungă la mulți oameni, fiind astfel bine primit. Dar în același timp, acestea fiind spuse, a fost un material care ne-a polarizat fanii. Cred că fanilor metal le-a fost greu să reacționeze la acest album. Nu spun că nu l-au apreciat, dar cred că se poziționează undeva în zona mai soft a preferințelor lor. Pe de altă parte, fanii de progresiv au fost foarte intrigați. Trăgând linie, da, a fost un album extrem de bine primit peste tot în lume.

Preferi o anume piesă de pe acest album? Și dacă da, de ce?

Dacă e să mă gândesc, "Ravenskill" a fost întotdeauna piesa pe care mi-a plăcut cel mai mult să o cânt. Modul în care o interpretez este foarte eteric, foarte light, după care devine dramatic, dinamic; se trece de la o voce fluidă, stinsă, la una foarte puternică, pe note înalte. Pentru mine, piesa aceasta a fost momentul cheie al după-amiezei de dinainte de a asculta albumul. Cred că asta este piesa care m-a atins pe mine în mod deosebit.

Firul epic al albumului este inspirat, parțial, de francize precum "Game of Thrones" și "Star Wars". Ce alte serii fantasy sau SF se află pe lista ta de filme favorite?

Am fost întodeauna un fan Trek, un fan Star Trek. Dar cred că ai nimerit exemplele destul de bine, "Star Wars" a fost uriaș, iar eu sunt un mare fan "Game of Thrones". Mai obișnuiam să mă uit la "Galactica", dar cred că asta este limita preferințelor mele în materie de serii fantasy și în stilul "Space Odyssey".

E vreo trupă nouă pe care îți place să o asculți în mod deosebit? Nu mă refer, neapărat, la o trupă metal, ci la orice trupă, indiferent de genul muzical. 

Da, sunt câteva. Ar fi Twenty One Pilots, îmi plac la nebunie tipii ăia. Și Shiny Toy Guns. Pe acestea două le urmăresc acum, în mod special. Ar mai fi Young the Giant, îmi plac și tipii din trupa asta. Cam asta ar fi, astea sunt trupele care îmi vin în minte acum.

Ultima oară când ați vizitat România, ne-ați invitat să petrecem ”O seară alături de Dream Theater”( "An evening with Dream Theater"). Acum sărbătoriți 25 de ani de la lansarea albumului ”Images and Words”. La ce ar trebui să se aștepte publicul de această dată?

Vor fi două seturi. În primul set cântăm piese din diverse albume. După care, evident, cel de-al doilea set se focalizează pe ”Images and Words”, de la început până la final, după care la bis vom cânta piesele de pe EP-ul "A Change of Seasons". Vor fi aproape 3 ore de muzică, producția este incredibilă, va fi o seară în care energia va fi la cote maxime, de la început până la final. Până acum, publicul a fost extrem de entuziast la fiecare show. Așa că aș spune că publicul din România va avea parte de un show pe cinste. E un concert foarte tare. Foarte ofertant din punct de vedere vizual, și evident din punct de vedere sonic, bine închegat. Vom cânta multe piese pe care, simțim noi, fanii le vor aprecia, de la primul set până la finalul celui de-al doilea.

Cum a decurs turneul, până acum?

Turneul a fost incredibil, a fost foarte fain să mergem să promovăm albumul "Images and Words". Noi vom continua turneul până la sfârșitul lui 2017. Mai avem de mers în Asia și Australia. După care vom ajunge în America de Nord. A fost super, pentru noi a fost o oportunitate de a realiza cât de multe persoane din întreaga lume au apreciat acest album, și încă îl apreciază și acum.

Îți mulțumesc mult. Sper să te simți cât mai bine în România.

Da, cu siguranță așa va fi. OK, ne vedem curând.

James LaBrie (Dream Theater), about the energy received from the fans in concerts: ”It's indescribable. It's a fantastic feeling”

After more than 25 years on stage, James LaBrie, the vocalist from Dream Theater, tells us that there is nothing like the feeling of being on stage and receiving all that energy from the fans. The sensation is ”indescribable”, and the music remains, for him, as captivating as it was when he just started playing in the band. 

Hello! This is Raluca from InfoMusic. Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us.

Hi! You're welcome.

You are currently celebrating 25 years since the release of "Images and Words", a big milestone in the history of the band. What personal memory from the recording session can you share with us?

We went into the studio to record "Images and Words" in October of '91 and we were all pumped. We were all very young and we were excited, we were recording an album for a major label. We knew, I mean we believed 100% in the music that we were about to record, which obviously became "Images and Words". There was a camaraderie amongst the band members, we were all very close to one another, and it was all just about the music, it was about the moment in the studio. We had a lot of fun. It was an exciting process, 'cause as we got further and further, along the recording process, we could really hear what was coming out and it was very exciting. And we were just praying that it would resonate with the fans around the world. And fortunately for us, it became a hit and it proliferated an international success.

How did the music and the listeners change since the release of ”Images and Words”?

You know, obviously, we went on to record many albums since ”Images and Words”. I think it always depends on the kind of album that we release. Our fans, generally, are split in two major groups: one is the progressive heads, and the others are the metal heads, 'cause we are a progressive metal band. So I think that if our album tends more over the metal edge, or more aggressive, we get a much stronger response from our metal fans. If the album happens to be more in the line of progressiveness, then we get the nudge from the progressive cyber fans. There's always a little bit of polarizing going on, from album to album, depending on what we do. We always try to kind of maintain a balance between the two predominant elements in our music, which is progressive and metal, but you know, sometimes we cross over a little more to one side or the other. But for the most part, I think, what's important, is that we always challenge ourselves, that we always try, to a certain degree, to reinvent ourselves and come up with something that is exciting and something that is creating a new vibe and showing that we are growing and continuing to evolve as a band. And I think that is the ingredient to a band sustaining and having a long lasting career. Is that you're able to mix things up from album to album and create something new. Yeah :)

What Dream Theater achievement are you most proud of?

Overall, I'm pretty much proud of everything that we've done. I think, if you're talking about specific albums, I think the albums that really touched me in a very profound way are ”Images and Words”, ”Scenes from a Memory”, ”Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence”, ”A Dramatic Turn of Events” and ”The Astonishing”. I think these are albums that kind of really struck a chord with me, and to me were very big statements, very bold statements, musically.

You’ve been doing music for more then 30 years now. If you would have the chance to do it all over again, would you change anything or would you do everything exactly the same?

No, I wouldn't change anything, 'cause I think that everything that we've done is significant. I don't think that could have been another way to approach what we represent musically. I think that we played our cards right, so to speak. That's the reason why I, personally, have a solo band. I do my solo albums because it is an outlet for me to create other kinds of music, that differ from Dream Theater. There are some similarities, but it allowed me a different musical environment to be able to express myself in other ways. That shows diversity. But as far as Dream Theater, I think that what we did, and where we were at, and how we went from album to album and grew, I think it was all necessary to be who we've always been and continue to be. So yeah, I can't see really flipping it up or taking another approach.

What do you enjoy the most about making music?

Everything. The process of writing is very exciting, because you can see how everything is coming to its full realization. Then the actual recording process, being able to hear it when its complete is very exciting. And then being able to get the reactions from the fans, that's another very good part of everything that you put into creating new music and the new releases, it's the kind of response, the reaction from the fans around the world. And ultimately, going out and playing it live, engaging with your fans and getting that energy. There's no environment like it, it's indescribable. It's a fantastic feeling. I think everything, in itself, leaves a very indelible mark on you. It's all necessary to the bigger picture.

What do you like to do for fun, when you’re not making music?

I love boating. I love camping, hiking, biking. I love skiing, downhill skiing. I love just chilling out with my family, getting together with friends, reading books. What else..that's about it. I love doing all those things.

Who influenced you at the beginning, when you started the band, and who do you admire now?

Well, my biggest influence, vocally, was always Freddy Mercury. There are several singers that I loved listening to, as I was growing up, but I would say that Freddie Mercury has always been my all time favorite. He was unique, there's never been anyone like him, incredibly talented, absolutely phenomenal voice. So yeah, I would think that's the man who really influenced and inspired me to become a singer. I think that as far as everything else that has happened, as a musician, it's all exactly the way that I wanted to play it out. And we've all been very fortunate to be doing this for 25 years plus, and we're still having a great time.

Is there any vocalist, from the metal scene, that you admire now? A contemporary one. 

I would say...I always liked Rob Halford (Judas Priest), from the metal scene. He has a great voice. Ronnie James Dio, Robert Plant were a huge influence for me as I was growing up. The earlier Aerosmith, Steven Tyler, he has a very unique voice. Ian Gillan, from Deep Purple. Recent metal vocalists...I don't know...I'm drawing a blank here. I don't listen to all that much metal anymore. I like Matt, from Muse, he has a great voice. There are a lot of great singers.

Your last album, „The Astonishing”, hit the Number One spot on the US Billboard Rock Chart. Congrats for that. What do you think triggered the audience attention?

Thank you. I think because it's a very theatrical approach to an album. It's a conceptual album, so it's telling a story, and I think it's a very dynamic element, musically, and I think that really grabs the attention of the progressive heads and the classical lovers of that kind of music, although there are some heavier moments in there. But I think it's just because the fact that is telling a story, that itself is intriguing, and the music itself is very moving. I think that the melodies are very powerful, both musically and vocally, so I think it resonates with many people and that's why it was well received. But at the same time, that being said, it was an album that polarized our fans. I think the metal fans had a hard time reacting to that album. I'm not saying a lot of them didn't appreciate it, but I would think it's a little on the softer side of things for them. Whereas, the progressive heads were very intrigued by it. Overall, yeah, it was extremely well received world wide.

Do you have any favorite song on this album? And if so, why?

Well, "Ravenskill" was probably always my favorite to sing. It's a very ethereal approach to the singing, very light, and then it's very dramatic, dynamic, you know, it goes from a very soft vocal to a very high and powerful vocal. For me, that was always a highlight withing the evening proceeding hearing the album. I think that would've been probably the one song that really hit me.

The narrative of the album is inspired, partially, by franchises such as ”Game of Thrones” and ”Star Wars”. What other fantasy and SF movies are on your list of favorites?

I was always a big Trek fan, a "Star Trek" fan. But I think you kinda just nailed it, "Star Wars" was huge, I am a huge fan of "Game of Thrones". "Galactica" I used to watch, but I think that's kind of the extent of my fantasy driven and "Space Odyssey" type of series.

Is there any new band that you particularly enjoy listening to? Not necessarily a metal band. Any new band. 

Yeah, there's a couple. There's Twenty One Pilots, I love those guys. And Shiny Toy Guns. Those two in particular, I'm really into right now. Young the Giant, I love those guys too. That's it, that's probably were my head's it right now.

Last time you visited Romania, you invited us to spend "An evening with Dream Theater". This time you are celebrating 25 years since the release of ”Images and Words”. What should the audience expect from this show?

Well, there's two sets. In the first set we play songs from various albums. And then, obviously, the second set is focused on "Images and Words", from beginning to end, and then on encore we play the EP "A Change of Seasons". It's almost three hours of music, the production is amazing, it's a very high energy evening, from beginning to end. So far, the audience has responded incredibly to each and every show. So I'd say the Romanian gazers are in for quite a treat. It's a very exciting show to see. Very visual, and obviously very sonic, and driven. And we are playing a lot of songs that we feel the fans can appreciate, from the first set, and into the second set.

How was the touring experiencing so far, from your perspective?

The touring experience has been amazing, has been great to go out and support "Images and Words". We will be out, continuing the tour, until the end of 2017. We're still going to Asia and Australia. And then we still have North America. It's been great, it's a way for us to recognize how this album touched so many people around the world and it still resonates quite strongly with them.
