A fost inspirat de Jimi Hendrix, la 36 de ani a scos primul album solo și a reușit să devină cea mai bună versiune a lui însuși. Respiră muzică, sunetele sale îți dau impresia că poți să ajungi la Lună și la Soare doar închizând ochii, iar pe data de 5 noiembrie va cânta la București, în club Control. Vorbim despre Eivind Aarset, artistul care ne-a împărtășit câteva gânduri și care ne-a spus că abia așteaptă să cânte pentru noi.
InfoMusic: Totul a început, la tine, cu rock, ascultându-l pe Jimi Hendrix. Îți mai aduci aminte ce primă impresie ți-a lăsat Hendrix?
Eivind Aarset: Ei bine, înainte de a-l auzi pe Hendrix, muzica era parte din viața de zi cu zi, ascultam la radio, la școală, dar da, atunci când am ascultat albumul lui Hendrix, totul s-a schimbat, percepția mea legată de muzică a fost alta, din acel moment. Cred că la început am fost atras de pasiunea și de energia care se regăseau în muzica lui Hendrix, care era atât de diferită de ale altor artiști pe care-i ascultasem până atunci. Dar, cu cât ascultam mai mult și înțelegeam mai bine, îmi dădeam seama de toate încrengăturile, de nivelurile complexe, de inovația și toate acele improvizații extraordinare care însemnau un risc major dar care aduceau și doza de unicitate la Hendrix. Piesele sale sunt în continuare o sursă de inspirație pentru mine.
InfoMusic: Apoi te-ai orientat spre jazz și chiar pop, reușind să cânți alături de mari artiști, cum e Cher, de exemplu. Faptul că ești atât de cameleonic când vine vorba de muzică îți permite să dai frâu liber creativității?
Eivind Aarset: Este un proces de lungă durată... Când eram tânăr, visam să stăpânesc toate tainele muzicii, să pot să cânt orice și, exersînd, am ajuns la un nivel care mi-a permis să fac unele înregistrări pop și să am turnee atât cu artiști norvegieni cât și cu staruri de talia lui Cher. Dar la un moment dat, odată cu vârsta, mi s-a părut normal și mai interesant să încerc să-mi găsesc propriul drum. Mi-am dat seama că nu pot să fiu bun la toate, dar cel mai important este să fiu cea mai bună variantă a mea și să nu imit pe nimeni. Îmi pare rău că n-am început acest proces mai devreme, ci abia la 36 de ani când am înregistrat primul meu album solo.
InfoMusic: Ai spus, cândva, că niciodată n-ai vrut să fii încorsetat, ci să fii capabil să creezi, să te exprimi. Ce anume îți hrănește spiritul pentru a fi în stare să creezi ceea ce vrei?
Eivind Aarset: Nu sunt sigur, mereu creez chestii, unele nu sunt chiar reușite însă există momente în care ceva rezonează cu mine, din punct de vedere emoțional și merg pe drumul acela și dezvolt ideea.
InfoMusic: Creezi sunete și le dai viață, te folosești de device-uri pentru a-ți exprima muzica interioară. Cum îți vorbesc gadgeturile?
Eivind Aarset: Uneori, un sunet nou poate să declanșeze idei, pentru mine, coarda de chitară nu e doar o coardă. Spre exemplu, imaginați-vă o orchestră simfonică ce interpretează trei note și apoi intervine un vibraphone, să zicem, cu aceleași tonuri. Garantat va avea un alt impact, va suna cu totul altfel. Și, evident, își va pune o cu totul altă amprentă asupra emoțiilor celor care ascultă. Cred că asta îmi place cel mai mult la gadgeturi, îmi permit să-mi orchestrez cântările în diverse moduri.
InfoMusic: Într-un interviu ai spus că vrei să dai formă și culoare sunetelor. Ce nuanțe are muzica pe care o creezi? Ce culori are sufletul tău pentru a fi capabil să dea formă sunetelor?
Eivind Aarset: Dacă ar trebui să aleg o culoare, aș spune că sufletul meu este verde închis, cam acea culoare pe care o admiri când te plimbi în pădure și observi umbre și ceață și când din când în când soarele mai strălucește printre frunze. Și sunt mai mult ca sigur că muzica mea are aceeași nuanță.
InfoMusic: Muzica ta este „construită”, este precum o casă în care spiritul și trupul se reunesc. Cum reușești să creezi echilibrul perfect al unui sunet care va rezista în timp?
Eivind Aarset: Aici vorbim despre un efort constant prin care încerc să găsesc acel ceva cu care să rezonez din punct de vedere emoțional.
InfoMusic: Ascultându-ți muzica, mintea se umple de imagini, notele creează adevărate povești ce se derulează cu rapiditate. Dacă ar fi să-ți imaginezi un film creat din sunetele tale preferate, cum ar fi acesta?
Eivind Aarset: Ar fi următoarea scenă... Pe o stradă întunecată se aude muzica ce vine de la un club. În interior este, cu siguranță, zgomot, dar afară se aude doar atât cât să te facă să-ți imaginezi poveștile. Sau, o altă scenă ar putea fi cea în care se vede o barcă pe un râu, iar în jur plutesc o mulțime de lucruri ciudate, atât la suprafață cât și în apă.
InfoMusic: Atunci când cânți, interacțiunea dintre muzicieni este extrem de importantă. Cu ce artist ți-ar plăcea să urci pe scenă?
Eivind Aarset: Sunt extrem de norocos încât să fi cântat alături de mai toți artiștii preferați. Cel mai important pentru mine este să lucrez cu oameni care-mi înțeleg limbajul muzical. Asta este vital.
InfoMusic: Cum îți menții degetele în formă?
Eivind Aarset: Încerc să cânt aproape zilnic. Și, bineînțeles, port mănuși atunci când car lucruri grele sau lucrez în grădină.
InfoMusic: Vei susține un concert în București. Un oraș te poate inspira, poate fi într-atât de senzual încât muzica ta să tresalte?
Eivind Aarset: Când am cântat în România, am fost impresionat de interesul vădit al oamenilor pentru muzica noastră, iar asta nu face decât să ne inspire pe scenă.

Eivind Aarset: "If I have to choose a color, I would say my soul is dark green"
He was inspired by Jimi Hendrix, he wanted to master almost everything but in the end he realized he had to focus on a very important thing: to be the best version of himself. He breathes music, his sounds give you the impression you want to catch the Moon and the Sun and he will come to Bucharest, for a concert, on the 5th of November, in Control Club. We are talking about Eivind Aarset, the artist who shared some thoughts with us and who can hardly wait to play for us.
InfoMusic: You began with rock, listening to Jimi Hendrix. Do you remember the first impression Hendrix had on you?
Eivind Aarset: Well, before I heard Hendrix, music was a part of my daily life like all my friends at school, you know hearing music from radio, songs we sing in school or at home, but when I heard Hendrix it changed me and my perception of music. I think I first was attracted by the wildness and energy, so different from all the other music I had heard until that point. But then the more I learn and understand, I see there so many layers of history, innovation, improvisational flow, playfulness and risk taking in his music and approach. His work is still an inspiration to me.
InfoMusic: After that you switched to jazz and even pop, playing with some great artists, like Cher, for example. Being so cameleonic gives you the power to be creative?
Eivind Aarset: It is a long process...when I was young my dream was to master everything, and through all that practicing that I got some skills that made me competent to do some session work. I did a lot of pop records and tours with Norwegian stars, and sometimes foreign stars like for instance Cher. But at some point I found it much more interesting to search my own path, it came with age. I realized I can’t master all, and instead I focused on what I found most interesting: being the best version of my self, instead of copying others. I regret I didn’t start this process at an earlier stage. I was already 36 when I made my first solo album.
InfoMusic: You once said you never wanted to be stiff but you wanted to be able to create, to express yourself. What feeds your heart in order to create music?
Eivind Aarset: I am not sure, I always make stuff, most of it is not good, but sometimes things surface that resonate with something emotional in me. Then I keep it and start developing it.
InfoMusic: You create sounds and give them life, you use devices in order to express your inner music. How do gadgets talk to you?
Eivind Aarset: Sometimes a new sound can trigger ideas, to me a chord is not only a chord consisting of like for just like an example: c g and e, it is depending so much on the sound, phrasing. Like for instance: imagine a symphonic orchestra playing these three tones, and then a vibraphone for instance playing the same notes. Totally different impact, it doesn’t sound anything like the same. And will also give different emotional impact. I think this is what I like about gadgets, it enables me to orchestrate my playing in a different way than if I just played straight to the amp.
InfoMusic: You once said that you cared about the shaping and the color of the sound. What color does your music have? What colors do your soul have in order to shape the sound?
Eivind Aarset: If I have to choose a color, I would say my soul is dark green, like when you walk in the forest and there are shadows and moist, sometimes the sun shines thru the roof of leaves. And I think maybe the music has the same color.
InfoMusic: Your music is „built”, is like a house where spirit and body meet. How do you create that balance in order to have the perfect sound that will resist in time?
Eivind Aarset: It is a constant work where I search for what resonate with me emotionally.
InfoMusic: Listening to your music, a lot of images come to mind, the notes create stories. Imagine a movie with your favorite sounds... How would it be?
Eivind Aarset: It could, for instance, be a scene like this: being outside in a dark street hearing some music from a club; inside it is probably really loud, but outside in the street the sound just resonates between the walls,…. Or it could be a boat floating very slowly on a big river, strange things float by and strange things are moving under the surface.
InfoMusic: When you play, the interaction between the musicians is very important. Is any musician you would like to play with?
Eivind Aarset: I am so lucky that I have played with most of my living favorite musicians. The most important to me is to work with musicians who understand, or at least can interact with my musical language.
InfoMusic: How do you keep your fingers in good shape?
Eivind Aarset: I play a little bit everyday if possible. And I wear gloves when I carry heavy stuff or doing work in the garden.
InfoMusic: Soon you’ll have a concert in Bucharest. A city can inspire your musical sensuality?
Eivind Aarset: The times I am played in Romania, it has struck me that the music audience seem very open minded and interested towards our music, and this is very inspiring for us on stage.
