InfoMusic: Bună băieți și bine ați revenit în România. Cum vă simțiți aici?
Dan Smith: Suntem fericiți să ne întoarcem, la festival și în țară.
InfoMusic: Ce amintire trăznită aveți dintr-o aventură de la “12 fără un sfert”?
Dan Smith: Ultima oară când am cântat la acest festival am ajuns prin oraș și am stat până dimineața cu John Newman și The 1975, a fost distractiv. Atunci au început să devină interesante lucrurile și în seara asta, la 12 fără un sfert, vom fi pe scenă.
InfoMusic: O să lansați în curând cel de-al treilea album. Ce îmi puteți spune despre el?
Dan Smith: Se numește "Doom Days" și abia așteptăm să iasă. Cu acest disc, o să facem oamenii să danseze! Începe cu “Quarter Past Midnight” și se termină “In the Morning”. Este despre escapism și a te rupe de problemele lumii și problemele din viața ta pentru o seară. Să te lași dus de val, să te distrezi într-o noapte când ieși în oraș. E un fel de scrisoare de dragoste pentru orașul din care ești.
InfoMusic: Îmi plac foarte mult mixtape-urile voastre. Aveți de gând să lansați și cea de-a patra parte?
Dan Smith: Da, anul acest, avem unul nou care va fi lansat.
InfoMusic: Cum alegeți piesele, cum le îmbinați?
Dan Smith: Sunt piese care ne plac nouă și despre care credem că le putem modifica. Nu cred că are sens să faci un cover dacă îl copiezi și atât. Ca în cazul melodiei “No scrubs” - e o nebunie să iei piesa cuiva și să o transformi în ceva diferit. Toate alegerile noastre sunt un fel de omagiu adus melodiilor care ne plac. Am făcut cover-uri după câteva piese dance, din anii ‘90 și cred că sunt melodii frumoase, însă producția este dură. E un pretext să ne distrăm cu piesele altor oameni și în același timp să experimentăm pe partea de producție, e un spațiu în care putem încerca să facem piese pe care să le punem pe albumele noastre mai apoi.
InfoMusic: Dacă ați avea super puteri ce ați schimba în această “lume nebună”? (“Wild World”, numele celui de-al doilea album)
Chris Wood: Să inversăm încălzirea globală, să inversăm Brexit.
InfoMusic: Da, ați avut câteva subiecte foarte serioase pe cel de-a doilea album și acum aveți un album mai fun.
Dan Smith: Ideea e că problemele astea încă există și sunt cumva mai rele decât înainte, dar acest album este despre de te rupe de lume pentru o noapte. Cred că escapismul este extrem de important. Suntem norocoși să facem muzică, asta e meseria noastră, e cumva de necrezut și ne simțim foarte norocoși. Oamenii ascultă muzică live, merg la concerte, la festivaluri, pentru că este un spațiu sigur în care poți fi între străini care iubesc același lucru ca tine și practic ești purtat în afara vieții tale pentru câteva ore și cred că acesta este un lucru pozitiv. Poate fi o experiență cathartică, o trăire benefică pentru mintea ta. Este un album trist, dar fericit în același timp.
InfoMusic: Dan, știu că iubești filmele foarte mult. Dacă ai putea să faci o conexiune între numele unui film și muzica voastră care ar fi?
Dan Smith: Nu știu, cred că ar fi Mulholland Drive pentru că îmi place la nebunie, cred că e un mod de a combina mai multe viniete și scene idiosincratice, care par diferite, dar în același timp se leagă unele de celelalte, deci cred că așa e și muzica noastră - încercăm multe lucruri diferite, însă toate acestea sunt legate prin intermediul nostru, care facem piesele.
InfoMusic: Și tu?
Chris Wood: Topgun. Topgun 2 apare în curând.
InfoMusic: Că tot am vorbit de adolescență. Ce muzică v-a format din punct de vedere muzical?
Dan Smith: Îmi plăceau Lauryn Hill și The Fudgees. Albumele “The Score” și “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” mi-au schimbat viața. Multă muzică pe care o ascultau părinții mei precum Paul Simon, The Beatles și Bowie și mulți alți artiști legendari care au scris piesă după piesă și cred că prin intermediul lor am învățat cum se scriu versuri și cum spui povești prin intermediul muzicii.
Dan Smith: Dar tu, Wood?
Chris Wood: Queens of the Stone Age și Muse. La fel cum a spus și Dan, am fost influențați și de muzica pe care o ascultau părinții noștri. Obișnuiam să cânt împreună cu tata, am făcut parte din mai multe trupe din orașul în care m-am născut și cumva am fost forțat să ascult melodiile alea și să le învăț.
InfoMusic: Dan, știu că ești unul dintre acei artiști care scriu piese despre alte lucruri, nu despre tine. De ce? Te simți mai confortabil în poziția asta?
Dan Smith: Cred că da. Este foarte multă autobiografie în piesele noastre, dar nu am vrut niciodată să fie un fel de jurnal. Unii oameni își iau lucruri de pe inimă prin intermediul muzicii, spun lucruri pe care altfel nu ar putea să le spună ca o modalitate cathartică prin care pot trece peste relații. Sunt multe elemente în muzica noastră, lucruri care ni s-au întâmplat, dar probabil că am un mod mai subtil de a transmite asta. Îmi place să mă gândesc la fiecare piesă ca la o poveste diferită și e un mod frumos, pentru mine, să evadez, să fiu creativ și în același timp să fiu și un scriitor.

InfoMusic: Hi guys and welcome back to Romania. How do you feel here?
Dan Smith: Really happy to be back, at the festival and in the country.
InfoMusic: What crazy memory do you have from a “quarter past midnight adventure”?
Dan Smith: The last time we played this festival we ended up going out in town and had a very late night with John Newman and The 1975 which was pretty fun. The whole point is that’s when the things started to get interesting for us so tonight at quarter past midnight we’ll be on stage.
InfoMusic: You’ll be releasing your third album. What can you tell me about it?
Dan Smith: Is called "Doomed Days" and we’re super excited about it. We are going to make people dance with this one. Starts from "Quarter Past Midnight" and it ends "In the morning". It’s about escapism and how shutting off from the problems of the world and the problems in your life for the evening and losing yourself in the fun and drama of a night out. This space of the evening is a sort of a love letter to going out in the city that you're from.
InfoMusic: I really love your mixtapes. Are you planning on releasing a fourth part to that?
Dan Smith: Yes, this year, we have a new one coming out.
InfoMusic: How do you choose the songs, how do you combine them?
Dan Smith: For us there are songs that we like and we can think we can do something different with. I think there’s no point in doing a cover if you’re just gonna copy it. The thing with "No scrubs" there is something ridiculous in taking someone else’s song and making it completely different. All of our choices are meant to be kind of affectionate nods to songs that we love or admire. We’ve done a few 90’s dance songs and I think a lot of those tunes were quite beautiful songs but the production was so harsh. It’s a fun excuse for us to f*ck around with other people’s songs and experiment with production as well, it’s a kind of space for us to try out different songs that we can then take back to our albums.
InfoMusic: If you had superpowers what would you change in this wild world?
Chris Wood: Reverse climate change, reverse Brexit …
InfoMusic: You had some serious matters on the second album. And now you’re having a fun one...
Dan Smith: I think the idea is the same problems still exists and they’re kind of worst but it’s about shuting of from them for a night. I think escapism is really important. We’re lucky enough to make music as our job and there’s something ridiculous and unreal about that and we feel very lucky. People go to see music live, people go to concerts, people go to festivals because it’s meant to be a safe space where you can be amongst strangers who all love the same thing and you can be transported outside of your life for a couple of hours and I think that’s so important and it’s amazing and really positive thing. It can be cathartic, it can be good for your head. It’s a very sad album but it’s also kind of joyous at the same time.
InfoMusic: Dan, I know you are a big movie lover. If you could connect one movie with your music what would that be?
Dan Smith: I don’t know, I’d say Mulholland Drive just because I love and I think it kind of all fits together but it’s a collection of really interesting idiosyncratic vignets and scenes that all feel quite different but they are all kind of tied together so I think that’s what our music is like - we like to try different things but it’s kind of held together by the fact that we make it.
InfoMusic: And you?
Chris Wood: Topgun. Topgun 2 is coming soon, I’m excited for this.
InfoMusic: Speaking about the teenager years. What kind of music shaped you?
Dan Smith: I loved Lauryn Hill and The Fudgees when I was growing up. "The Score" and "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" both of those records were life changing. A lot of music that my parents used to listen to like Paul Simon, The Beatles and Bowie and so many of those massive iconic artists just wrote amazing song after amazing song and I think that taught me a lot about songwriting and how to tell stories in songs.
Dan Smith: What about you, Wood?
Chris Wood: Queens of the Stone Age and Muse. Same as Dan, obviously you were influenced by what were your parents playing as well. I used to play with my dad in various bands in my hometown as well so yes I was kind of forced to listen to a few songs and learn them as well.
InfoMusic: Dan, I know that you are one of those artists that write about other things that yourself. Why is that? Do you feel more comfortable?
Dan Smith: I guess. There’s a lot of autobiography in our songs I think but I never wanted it to be like a diary. Some people use music to get things off their chest, things that they can’t say otherwise as kind of a cathartic way to get through relationships. There’s a lot of elements and things that happened to me and us in our music, I’m just maybe sort of less explicit about it. And I quite like thinking of each songs as a little different story and it’s quite a nice way for me to sort of escape and be creative and be a bit of a writer.
