Post-punk, gospel, industrial, experimental rock, toate se găsesc în piesele lor cu mesaj extrem de puternic. Încercaţi să ascultaţi “Blood”, “Games”, “In Parallax” şi veţi descoperi o trupă extraordinară, o voce adâncă şi pătrunzătoare, un manifest politic şi un sound care rămâne în inimă. Ei sunt Algiers, (vocalist/guitarist Franklin James Fisher, bassist Ryan Mahan, guitarist Lee Tesche şi drummer Matt Tong) - o trupă din Atlanta, care va susţine un concert în Control pe data de 4 februarie 2018. InfoMusic: Algiers este o trupă care a luat fiinţă acum 10 ani. În majoritatea interviurilor, aţi afirmat că apariţia trupei a fost, oarecum, un proces natural, organic. Cum v-aţi dat seama că acesta este fix mesajul pe care-l căutaţi pentru muzica voastră?
Algiers: Cred că atunci când un act colectiv se simte natural şi organic, nu mai este nevoie de nimic altceva. Cât priveşte mesajul, dintotdeauna am avut o idee despre ce am vrea să exprimăm noi, ca trupă, chiar înainte să fim un band. N-am avut nevoie să ne dăm seama de nimic, n-a trebuit decât să găsim câteva puncte esenţiale care să ne dea traiectoria pe care o căutam împreună.
InfoMusic: Toate piesele voastre au un foarte puternic mesaj care-i face pe cei care le ascultă să iasă, oarecum, din zona lor de confort şi să se gândească la versurile voastre. Să coborâţi, atât în adâncurile sufletelor voastre cât şi-n măruntaiele societăţii este greu pentru a compune această muzică?
Algiers: Este dificil, uneori, să găseşti cea mai bună modalitate de a da o formă ideilor, astfel încât să fie plăcută urechilor în varianta unei piese pop. În asta constă lupta. Una este să scrii nişte versuri şi este cu totul altceva să creezi versuri care să aibă legătură şi cu muzica ce vine la pachet cu ele. Pentru lucrurile care se regăsesc în piesele noastre, pentru tot ceea ce gândim şi pentru tot ceea ce trăim zi de zi nu trebuie să mergem prea adânc în sufletele noastre. Este un efort mare, atât fizic cât şi mental, să le prezentăm aşa cum sunt, să fim reali.
InfoMusic: Muzica voastră, pentru mesajele pe care le are, este fie îndrăgită, fie urâtă. Au existat persoane care să vă spună că urăsc piesele voastre?
Algiers: Oh. Well, e bine de ştiut. Aşadar suntem ceea ce se cheamă a marmite band? Nu, n-a venit nimeni care să ne spună că ne urăşte, dar cred că indiferenţa este mai dureroasă.
InfoMusic: În piesele voastre există o combinaţie perfectă între versuri şi sound. Ce se naşte mai întâi?
Algiers: Cred că cel mai probabil muzica, dar ideea versurilor creionează sound-ul şi apoi vin sunetele pentru a ne ajuta să conturăm exact tema.
InfoMusic: Ascultându-vă piesele, de mai multe ori, noi şi noi mesaje ies la iveală iar una dintre piesele care te pun pe gânduri este Blood. Ce anume a inspirat acest single?
Algiers: Aceasta a fost prima piesă pe care am lansat-o şi prima noastră încercare de a crea ceva stratificat, ca să zicem aşa. Da, cred că piesa este multilayered. Pentru partea video am dorit să facem ceva care să arate exact cine suntem şi de unde venim. Este, oarecum, o hartă a noastră sau ADN-ul nostru ca trupă.
InfoMusic: Există vreo piesă care v-a rănit sufletele în procesul de creaţie?
Algiers: Atunci cînd am mixat albumul, sigur am rănit ceva, sufletul lui Randall Dunn, atunci când i-am spus să facă totul de la capăt pentru “The Underside of Power” chiar la o zi după ce crezuse că totul era gata. A fost o adevărată provocare pentru că fiecare vedea albumul într-un mod diferit. De exemplu, Franklin a fost nevoit să se adîncească în el însuşi pentru partea vocală a piesei “Mme Rieux” deoarece era o piesă care chiar conta pentru Ryan şi asta i-a creat lui Franklin o stare de anxietate. Aşa se întâmplă când vrei să dai ce e mai bun în tine şi să surprinzi exact ce trebuie.
InfoMusic: Albumele voastre nu pot primi vreo etichetă în ceea ce priveşte stilul deoarece mixează genurile într-un mod perfect. Fiind din locuri diferite, fiecare dintre voi, vă ajută să creaţi un asemenea mix şi un sound unic?
Algiers: Da, cred că asta are un cuvânt de spus în munca noastră. Ryan este în Londra şi merge la o mulţime de concerte underground, iar influenţele se văd în albumul lansat anul trecut, „The Underside of Power”. Şi da, faptul că nu suntem mereu împreună ne permite să fim şi detaşaţi şi să ne ajustăm ideile unul la celălalt fără a fi presaţi de ceva. Asta se simte “organic”, ca să facem referire la prima întrebare.
InfoMusic: Cum vi se pare lumea, astăzi? Credeţi că mentalitatea poate fi schimbată cu ajutorul unor mesaje ca ale voastre?
Algiers: Niciodată nu ştii cum vor fi lucrurile. Următoarea generaţie de lideri va încerca să fie ca precedenta, nu vor diferi decât dungile costumelor. Over and over again. Noi cu siguranţă am fost expuşi multor idei noi prin muzică şi sperăm să putem oferi celor care ne ascultă o bază solidă care să le permită să iasă din cochiliile lor, să exploreze şi să caute adevărul.
InfoMusic: Peste câteva zile veţi susţine un concert la Bucureşti. Ce ştiţi despre România?
Algiers: Gheorghe Hagi este numele care-mi vine în minte imediat, datorită remarcabilului gol din cadrul Cupei Mondiale din 1994. Ni s-a spus că Bucureştiul este cool, aşa că sperăm din tot sufletul că ne vom face prieteni aici şi că ne vom simţi bine.
InfoMusic: Ce vreţi să le transmiteţi celor care vor veni la concert?
Algiers: Please, veniţi şi staţi de vorbă cu noi, povestiţi-ne despre voi. Nu muşcăm, să ştiţi!

InfoMusic: Algiers is a band formed almost 10 years ago. In all your interviews you said it was a natural process, something organic. How did you realize this was the message you wanted for your music?
Algiers: I think when some kind of collective act feels natural and organic, you rarely find the cause to put words to the realisation. I think in terms of message, we already had ideas about what we wanted to do as a band long before we were actually making music together. There was no need to realise anything as such, only the need to identify some key principles that would come to inform our process of working together.
InfoMusic: All your songs have very strong lyrics that make the audience get out of their comfort zone and think. Is the process difficult to dig in your souls, in the society in order to create something like this?
Algiers: It’s difficult sometimes to find the best way to frame ideas and narratives within the kind of cadence that will sound pleasant to the ear when delivered as a pop song. That is always such a struggle. There is writing poetry and then there is writing poetry that has to make sense with its accompanying music. The things we sing about we think about and live all the time, we don’t have to dig deep, but to do it properly and to do our ideas justice, that takes a lot of work, spiritually and physically.
InfoMusic: Your music is either loved, or hated. Were people that told you they hated your songs?
Algiers: Oh. Well, that’s good to know. We’re what you would call a marmite band then? No-one’s really come up in person and told us they hate us, but perhaps the worst thing we could encounter is indifference.
InfoMusic: In your songs there is a perfect melange between lyrics and sounds. Which one comes first?
Algiers: Probably the sounds, but subject matter forms the sound, then the sound has come next to help us fully realise the subject matter.
InfoMusic: Listening to your songs, over and over again, new messages come to the surface and one of these songs is “Blood”. Can you tell me what inspired you for this single?
Algiers: This was the first song that we released and was the first time our began to formulate. I think the song is multilayered. For the video we wanted to created something that provided context for who we were and where we were coming from. It acts a bit like our roadmap or DNA.
InfoMusic: Is there any song that „hurt” your souls creating it?
Algiers: When we mixed the album, we certainly hurt our mixer, Randall Dunn’s soul when we asked him to make a brand new mix of “The Underside of Power” the day after he thought he had finished it. It was a real monster to deal with. We all struggled with different aspects of the record. For instance, Franklin really had to dig deep to record the vocal for “Mme Rieux” as it was a song Ryan had written that was deeply personal to him and it caused Franklin a certain amount of anxiety in wanting to do the best job he could to represent Ryan in the song.
InfoMusic: Your albums can’t be labeled because they mix a lot of genres in a perfect way. Being from different locations, all of you, help you create such a mix and have such an interesting and unique sound?
Algiers: I think some of the local scenes we find ourselves amongst work their way in there. Ryan is in London and he goes to a lot of grime shows, which has certainly made its presence felt in the latest record. Ultimately, not being together all the time means we can sit back and spend time adjusting ourselves to each other’s ideas without the pressure of having to deliver an immediate on something. This feels “organic”, which refers back to your first question.
InfoMusic: How do you find world nowadays? Do you think mentality can be changed by a music like yours?
Algiers: The world is always at odds with what it could be. The next generation of bosses will still try to be like the previous bosses. They will just wear different stripes. Over and over again. We’ve certainly been exposed to new ideas through music, so we hope that we can at the very least provide a solid foundation for people to go out and explore and look for truth in other places.
InfoMusic: In a few days you’ll have a concert in Bucharest, Romania. What do you know about this country?
Algiers: Gheorghe Hagi is the immediate person who comes to mind due to his remarkable exploits in the 1994 World Cup. We’ve been told Bucharest is really cool, so hopefully we’ll make many friends there and have a great time.
